Samson Kiprono Barmao and Kenza Dahmani prevail in the loudest marathon in Poland

24.04.2017

Neither competitors nor the windy conditions were able to prevent Samson Kiprono Barmao (KEN) and Kenza Dahmani (ALG) from winning the DOZ Marathon Lodz 2017. The race was an upset for the Polish female favorite – Agnieszka Mierzejewska – who had to leave the course because of an injury.

A group of five elite athletes opened the first 10 km in 31:19. Jafred Kipchumba Chirchir (KEN), who had the best PB in the field seemed to be willing to push stronger but did not decide to take the risk and lead the race alone. Such a status quo was kept until the 34th kilometer when Samson Kiprono Barmao performed a decisive attack. Only Asmare Workneh (ETH) was able to keep his pace but he was also left behind after several minutes, keeping a safe advantage over Jafred Kipchumba Chirchir who was running in third. Eventually, Barmao finished in 2:14:19, forty-nine seconds ahead of Workneh and beating Chirchir by more than two minutes.

- Of course, I am happy to win here, in Lodz. The conditions were really tough, very windy. Surely, this affected the results. It was hard to run faster – said Samson Kiprono Barmao.

In the women's race, there was a huge upset shortly into the race as the local favorite and two-time runner-up from Lodz – Agnieszka Mierzejewska (POL) – had to withdraw due to the Achilles tendon injury. This made it clear that the victory will be decided between Kenza Dahmani and the Ethiopians, who completed the first half in 1:15:42. The Algerian saved the most energy for the final stage of the marathon and prevailed in 2:33:21 – her new PB – followed by Amelawork Fikadu Bosho (2:34:25) and Tigist Shetu Bilto (2:34:37).

A total of 1500 runners conquered the marathon distance, accompanied by another 2500 participants of Ibuprom Sport 10k Run, which was staged as a side event.

The loudest marathon in Poland

DOZ Marathon Lodz 2017 was announced the 'Loudest Marathon in Poland'. Along the race course there were 52 official cheering points. Half of them played live music performed by local bands selected by Piotr Rogucki - artistic director of the event and the leader of a popular Polish rock band – COMA. By the way, Rogucki himself finished the marathon race in 3:59:31.

Beside the music cheering points, there were another 26 points staged by local schools and companies. The whole music and cheering festival ended up in the Atlas Arena, one of the biggest sport and entertainment venues in Poland, where traditionally the finish line was located.
